I have been working since 1996 for the People’s Bank of China, a Chineseversion of the Federal Reserve, at its unique research institute of securityprinting, with the responsibility of designing the Chinese currency and themachinery to produce it. By engaging me in a variety of projects, the jobafforded me ample exposure to cutting-edge developments in computertechnologies, particularly in CAD software. I have, for example, recentlyredeveloped a purchased CAD (Computer Aided Design) software to make it moresuitable for our own purposes. By adding our own part/subassembly to thedatabase and make our own drawing criteria, we have achieved dramatically betterefficiency.
My job performance, which has won me professional respect from all of mycolleagues, was achieved thanks to the strong background I acquired as a studentin computer science. My undergraduate GPA ranked first among the 63 students ofclassmates in mechanical department, for which I was awarded first-class andsecond-class prizes many times. My graduate GPA ranked among the top 4% of the105 students in my year, which won me the “San Hao” scholarship every yearduring the three years of my graduate studies.
Unlike many other Chinese students, who are content with performing well inexams, I made a point of learning through my own hands-on experiences. In theMaster’s program at the Beijing Institute of Printing, I gained an in-depthunderstanding of artificial intelligence, including expert system and geneticalgorithm, especially in neural network. For my thesis, I programmed amulti-level BP neural network with C language to analyze my mathematical model,and applied much of my knowledge in optimization. I thus became able to programwith a host of different computer languages, especially C++, with which I helpedmy graduate advisor to design a paper-cutting machine. To analyze the mechanismstatically and dynamically, I programmed a software system to analyze andemulate it on screen. In undergraduate studies, I had often programmed withFortran77 and the Basic language.
Upon the completion of my Master’s studies, I easily passed the doctoralrecord examination in CAD/CAM of Beijing University, one f the top universitiesin China. But I gave up the opportunity in order to gain more practicalexperience in the industry. The decision proved to be right, as it guaranteed mebetter access to sophisticated facilities, such as state-of-the-art personalcomputers. With the People’s Bank of China, I have thus accumulated solidexpertise in many kinds of operating and application software systems,particularly in CAD. I now have a firm grip on the latest developments incomputer science in China.
The challenges I met and the successes I achieved at the People’s Bank havenot only endowed me with confidence but also fired off my desire to furtherimprove myself. I have enjoyed high-quality and efficient production with theuse of a kind of PC-based CAD software, MDT, developed by Autodesk Corporation.I now have a dream: some day, every person can design his favorite product withsome sort of CAD software, and then search for an ideal factory over high-speedinternet its production; and the factory will put specifications of the product,as it has received them via the high-speed internet into its CIMS, and out popsthe product, as designed, at the end of the factory’s production line. It is abeautiful dream for every engineer, but many difficulties the speed ofdata-transfer and how to manage the product data among CAD, CAM, CAPP and CAEsystems. These questions are fascinating, and I would like to come up with myown answers to them.
To prepare myself for advanced studies in your country, I have persisted inimproving my English proficiency. As demonstrated by my score of 700 (96%) inthe verbal section of GRE, I now have an adequate command of English forundertaking graduate studies in your program.

The desire to know more about the nature has motivated me to step into thebroad world of science. I have cultivated my great interest in physics and a lotof related fields since I was very young. I was armed with strong foundation inphysics due to my three years’ time in Tianjin Nankai High School (one of themost famous high schools in China).
In the September of 20xx, I entered University of Science and Technology ofChina and became a member of physics department since then. During the period ofhard trying to adapt the new life, both my knowledge and my maturity haveremarkably grown and I finally got overall GPA3.5/4.0, and major GPA 3.8/4.0. Myhard working finally earned me the Outstanding Student Scholarship in 20xx.
My two years’ research in Structure Research Laboratory of USTC has broughtme to a more extensive and practical field of physics. Served as anundergraduate research assistant in Professor Xianhui Chen’s group, I havedevoted most of my time to the research and my knowledge in condensed matterphysics and its related field have greatly increased. Meanwhile, I have got several paperssubmitted to the international journals this year.
Besides, through the work, I obtained almost all the skills of manipulationof the corresponding instruments from physical preparation to characterization.What’s more, I can skillfully use software, (GSAS and etc), to analyze thestructure of the material through X-ray diffraction data. Actually, thehappiness I gained from the cooperation with others and the approach of thephysics science was greater. I often have discussion with other members in mygroup on the current encountered problem and new ideas for research. During theweekly group meeting, we exchanged our views on our current research project andI have learned a lot through this communication.
Meanwhile, I never give up searching for more extensive and challengingfield. Actually, some of my present work is from my own idea. For instance, Ihave grown some single crystals of highly efficient thermoelectric materials,such as Bi2Sr2CoO6+y, Ca3Co4O9.......,aimed to find the relationship between themisfit structure of CoO2 layer and the high thermoelectricity,magneto-resistance and magneto-power. What’s more, I have paid extra attentionto the technique in synthesizing the nanowires and nanoparticles. Igrasped a number of methods, such as micro-emulsion, hydrothermal method,sol-gel and other soft chemical ways to synthesize the nano scale materials.Under the available condition, I am synthesizing the nano scale superconductingmaterial YBCO and nanowires of magnetic materials, such as La0.5Ba0.5MnO3.
During my exploring of the novel polycrystalline Co1212 and Fe1212, Irealized the importance of cooperation. Because of the limitation ofexperimental condition, our samples can not become superconducting. In order tosolve the problem, we cooperated with Institute of Physics of China AcademicScience to obtain the extreme pressure. I realized the cooperation within andwithout a group equally important, and sometimes accomplishment is gained underseveral groups of people. We also have done some work in YBCO thin filmtransport property, collaborated with professor C. L. Chen of SuperconductingCenter Texas, U.S.A.
In addition, I have also attend some of other sub-group’s research project,such as using sol-gel method to grow Ru1212, NaCoO2 transport propertyinvestigation and colossal magneto resistance materials preparation. What’smore, I have also attended the 7th National Superconductivity Conference andNational Annual Conference of Physics in 20xx.
Research interest and future plan
I have accumulated a large amount of knowledge in condensed matter physics.I am greatly interested in the low dimension system, highly correlated electronsystem. The past work on nanostructure materials and thin film also amazed me todo further research in these areas. Also, I have been looking forwards to reacha wider field in physical science. After two years’ research experience inStructure Research Lab, my experimental ability has been greatly developed andmy potential for research has also been proved. In this age of information, traditional education, both in its ideology and methodology, has met unprecedented challenge like many other aspects of human existence. The educational model that is centered around the cognitive and intellectual instruction has been seriously questioned. There have also been innovations in educational research methodology. It is also important to carry out educational experimentations in which educational predictions are complemented by educational feedbacks. Both the complexity of education and the complexity of human individuals have made the comprehensive application of diverse educational approaches necessary. Those new horizons are what fascinate me.

In March 20x I completed a Future Learn course about how genes influencecancer development. I found this very beneficial as it built on my knowledge ofgenetics and how this has been used to produce technological advances that mayeventually cure cancer. For this reason I am currently doing another onlinecourse about wealth and income inequality with the Open University. As anacademic scholar I thrive on opportunities for independent research and work,and these courses have allowed me to achieve these aims.
The subjects I have taken through to A Level have taught me valuableskills; Mathematics has developed my problem solving and data analysis skillsand studying Biology and Chemistry has allowed me to think critically andimprove my investigative skills.
